Data science internship/career problem

I'm a data science student, I'm doing an internship in company X.

since I joined the company, no task was assigned directly to me. I was asking my tutor to give me a task so he told me to check the current model and see if I can make it better.

I did that in ~2 weeks, I've read the idea behind the model, read his code, coded my approach and added the evaluation. When I finished doing it, I did my pull request, he checked the model but didn't validate it (even tho it has better accuracy and inference time but he/she said it's not the time to migrate).

After that, new clients started coming and since that day I'm only running notebooks for training and evaluation on existing models and adding the predictions to the DB ( ofc this process can all be automated but yeah ).

As for the team, even tho they are friendly, I don't feel like I'm learning anything from them, I feel it's the opposite since I don't have the time now to read papers, blogs and check what's new in the field. There's no project manager for the team or someone who assigns tickets and tasks too.

Is this really the work of a data scientist? or it's just this company? I'm feeling depressed because I had already work offers as a data engineer last year and didn't accept them so I can do my masters in DS.

Thanks,
