I need to have the time/clock on for about 30 mins. Just the time I can see in dark. The screen doesn't turn off. Is there any application or way I can have the time on for xx minutes in case I need it? HTC Desire on Android 2.1

I have a Motorola Droid (v1) and a docking station. When the phone is docked, it automatically runs the Clock app, which isn't very configurable. Are there any alternatives to the Clock app, or is there any way to configure the phone to run a different app while docked?
My Motorola Backflip (Android 1.6) doesn't update its clock until the screen is turned on. This wouldn't be a problem except that the alarm won't go off in the morning unless I'm already up and checking my phone. This problem does not occur if the phone is charging. Is this a setting? How can I correct this?
