Last month I made a few saisons at 80°F (27°C), and was able to maintain that temperature with a single fermwrap. Now, for some reason, a single fermwrap is only getting the temperature to 72°F (22°C). I haven't pitched the yeast and its been 48 hours. I figured, if one couldn't do it, maybe two of them could, so I wrapped another fermwrap over the first fermwrap. Now I am at work and am wondering if this is a firehazard. …
I finally hooked a PowerSwitch Tail II up to my Raspberry Pi and Fermwrap. The RPi has DS18B20 temperature probes directly measuring the temperature of the wort by going down through the airlock. For this particular yeast strain, Northern Brewer recommends its optimal temperature range as 66-74°F (18.9-24.3°C). What I did was subtract 66 from 74 to get 8. I rather arbitrarily chose that the fermwrap should be turned on when the temperature is lower than the bottom 30% of …
I've been looking into fermentation temperature control and came across BrewPi. Even though I live in Southern California, I'd like to be able to keep some brews at optimal temperature -- the house does get somewhat cold during the winter. Relatively, at least ;) Can I use the this BrewPi setup with a Fermwrap without a fermentation chamber? I can probably put it into a small room where heat loss will be minimal. I already have a kegerator, so having …
Here is a "Carboy Heater" from Adventures in Homebrewing. Here is an "Electric Fermentation Heater" from Northern Brewer. I just learned yesterday that "Fermwrap" is a product from MoreBeer. Looking at the pictures, the Fermwrap looks identical to the non branded products, but I've been able to find the non branded products cheaper than the Fermwrap. I went ahead and bought more Fermwraps just to be consistent with my previous purchases. However, are they perfect substitutes for each other, or …
I have four carboys in the closet and four in my bedroom on account of doubling production. The carboys in the bedroom have towels wrapped around them to prevent sunlight from hitting them. I ought to purchase better drapes, but in the meantime, is it ok for me to wrap a Fermwrapped carboy in a towel? Edit: I am referring to safety and efficiency. Edit: Another thought: I have all the cardboard boxes which the carboys came in. Can I …
This is my first temperature controller and first use of a Fermwrap. I understand that the Johnson A419 Temperature Controller can only do hot or cold at one time. Which mode does it default to when you buy it? I plugged in the Fermwrap into the controller and set the controller's set point to 80F. The Controller read 66F, but the Fermwrap did not warm up. Not sure whether or not the default mode was cold, I set the set …
