I know how to get walking/public transportation/biking directions, but driving directions are the only ones I can navigate (tracks the location, shows turns coming up, compensates for wrong turns, etc.). How can I navigate on the walking directions? And yeah, I know that I can show the walking directions on the map, and try to follow them myself, but then it's always north up instead of track up and it doesn't make any attempts to snap the GPS location to …
I have a few use cases for this - running or walking to track distance and time, hiking to know if I'm backtracking on myself, and driving aimlessly (well, when gas prices are cheaper than they are now) around an area to explore it so I know places that I've already been. I did a quick look around the market and nothing stood out. Does something like this exist?
I am thinking of buying an Android phone soon (Probably Desire HD), and would like to use it to record hiking trips GPS data. All those run tracking apps seems just right to me, but I am looking for something that can run more than a few hours, so I figured that turning off the wifi/3g/cell antennae will give me a much longer battery life. Is it possible to achieve it easily? Maybe only with root access?
