I need a way (possibly a third-party application) that allows me to use maps and GPS without an Internet connection. I don't use it by car, just for walking in cities. It would be nice if I could just copy all data relative to a particular city before going there for tourism. The Google Maps app does not store maps reliably, so it is risky to rely on it without an Internet connection.
I've had several instances where this information would have been useful when navigating w/ Moto Droid, but I haven't been able to figure out a way to get to interstate (USA) rest areas in Google Maps Navigation. Are they grouped in with something else? Called something else? I was thinking of suggesting this to Google, but I wanted to make sure it wasn't already there and missing it.
Is there any way to have certain apps automatically turn on GPS when they launch (or at least prompt me if I want to)? For example, if I use voice commands to ask for navigation directions, and GPS is not turned on, I'd like for it to enable GPS instead of guessing from cell towers. Bonus points if it turns it back off when I close the app.
Is there any app or setting that will automatically check in to foursquare when I arrive at a venue without having to take out the phone and click the app? Preferably something where I can mark "favorite" venues to check in to, such as work. Thanks
I was wondering how accurate is the GPS is in my HTC Desire Android compared to a dedicated hand held GPS unit or in car satnav? The reason I ask is that I have read articles complaining that the iPhone's GPS is not very accurate and wondered if it applied to all mobiles.
I have a few use cases for this - running or walking to track distance and time, hiking to know if I'm backtracking on myself, and driving aimlessly (well, when gas prices are cheaper than they are now) around an area to explore it so I know places that I've already been. I did a quick look around the market and nothing stood out. Does something like this exist?
I'd like for my Android phone to automatically turn off some features overnight to save battery, and re-enable them in the morning. Among the things I'd like to turn do: Turn off wifi Turn off the GPS Use only 2G data networks I don't need any fancy idle detection. I'd be happy with the ability to do this from, say, 12am to 6am. What Android apps are good for this sort of thing?
When I use Google Maps it sets my Google Latitude location, but once I turn Maps off it stops. I'd like it to update with my location on a regular basis. I don't want to drain the battery by always using the GPS, but it'd be nice if it updated, say, every half hour or so.
I have an HTC Desire with T-Mobile Germany branding. Last Sunday I finally got the long-awaited Android 2.2 update from my operator. The update ran successfully. However, since then it doesn't get the GPS location! The blue dot won't lock on Google Maps. Another GPS-App, "Gps Status" cannot get the coordinates, even after almost half an hour. Restart or reinserting the SD-Card doesn't help. I wonder if anyone here experienced something similar after the update. Cheers
The fact that free gps turn-by-turn navigation is available for new enough Android devices using Google-owned map data is well known. Does Android offer free navigation in non-US countries as well?
I love the Navigation app on Android. The voice it uses is fine, but I'd like a little variety. I'd settle for it using the British voice that's available on the phone. However, I've changed the Text-to-speech setting on the phone for language to British, but it hasn't changed the voice used by Navigation. There is not a setting in Navigation for the voice. Assuming it uses the "locale" setting, my only options on the Droid are "English" or "Español". …
Possible Duplicate: Where can I find stock or custom ROMs for my Android device? I recently bought a Samsung Galaxy 5 (model number GT-I5500) and I'm new to the android world. I'm not satisfied with the performance of the GPS on my cell phone so I thought it would be interesting to use a custom ROM to see if it improves a bit. Anyone knows of a ROM that was tested in this model?
I am thinking of buying an Android phone soon (Probably Desire HD), and would like to use it to record hiking trips GPS data. All those run tracking apps seems just right to me, but I am looking for something that can run more than a few hours, so I figured that turning off the wifi/3g/cell antennae will give me a much longer battery life. Is it possible to achieve it easily? Maybe only with root access?
