How to change the 'hosts' file to redirect URLs?

For windows machine we got the hosts file to edit to redirect url's to other domains. Is there a file like that on android? I'm looking to redirect a very long url to a shorter one using the hosts file, is this possible? This can also be used to redirect a list of known spam domains to nothing so the worst flash/gif adds are removed. I'm running Android 2.1 on a rooted samsung galaxy S

How can I access Internet using my PC through an Android phone connected via USB?

I have a phone with Android 2.2 (HD2 with CM6.0) enabled to surf internet pages (data connection). Now, I would like to "surf" using my PC connected via USB to the phone. Is it possible? Which programs do I need both on PC and Android? If there are multiple solutions available, a free or low cost one is preferred

Can I override the default DNS settings on an HTC Evo without root access?

Is there any way to override the Sprint DNS server(s) used by default on the 3G connection of an HTC Evo running Froyo without root access? The reason I want to do this is because some sites are able to resolve when I'm using OpenDNS or Google DNS while connected via WiFi at home, but when I'm on 3G, the same sites come up as page not found, so the easiest culprit to blame is DNS.

I have rooted my phone, but why can't I Telnet?

I have a T-Mobile G1 and rooted it using AndRoot. I've confirmed that I have root by using Wireless Tethering, I get all the required request superuser permission dialogues. However when I go to the Telnet application and try to telnet it refuses to let me, I get: Error While connecting to server localhost/127.0.0.1:23 - Connection Refused.
