PVC and PTFE Plastic for Long Term Wort Contact

I use a Raspberry Pi with water proof temperature sensors fed in through the airlock to measure the temperature of the wort. They are in contact with the wort from pitch and up to bottling, 4-6 weeks. The website that I buy them from now lists what they are made out of. The ones I use are PVC (Link). They also have another, more expensive, option for PTFE (Link). The links don't specify whether they are food safe, alcohol resistant, …

How to compensate for fermentation heat?

My current method of fermentation temperature management is submerging my carboy into a large bucket of water. I regulate the temperature of my water with ice packs/frozen water bottles to keep it at the desired temperature. I use a pretty large volume of water so temperature fluctuations are minimal, maybe a degree or two over 24 hours. My concern is that I am setting the temperature of the water to the desired fermentation temperature but the actual temperature inside the …

How Much (and How Fast) of a Drop in Temperature can (Ale) Yeast Tolerate? (And Preliminary Results from My Experiment)

I have rigged up a Raspberry Pi with some DS18B20 temperature probes that measure both the water in the swamp cooler and the beer directly and store the results in a MySQL database. I brewed a new batch on 7/18, and fermentation began on 7/19, from which I have put varying amounts of frozen water bottles into the swamp cooler on 8 occasions. Here is the pattern I have currently noticed for adding frozen water bottles during primary fermentation (the …

What is the purpose of multiple temperature probes in a brew-pi fermentation control setup?

I am building a fermentation fridge and for the controler I'm looking at brew-pi vs STC 1000. One of the advantages of the brew-pi is that it can handle multiple sensors. I don't understand the point of multiple sensors and I can't find information how they would work together. I can only assume it's to get an average temperature of the beer in the fermenter, or otherwise how are they an advantage. My system will be a single chamber converted …

How to add temperature measurement and control to my Brooklyn Brew Shop beer kit?

My wife got me this beer making kit for my birthday. The first two brews failed horribly due to bad sanitation, but the third one, an American Pale Ale, turned out alright. The only thing I didn't like about it, was that it very heavy, not unlike certain Belgian, quadruple beer. I'm not too sure what caused it, but my guess is the fact that we've had a few very hot days while it was fermenting. It's either that, I …

How Should I Place a Digital Thermometer into My Fermentation Chamber and Keep it Airtight?

I have a setup with a raspberry pi and two DS18B20 digital thermometers that measure the temperature of the ambient air and the water in a swamp cooler that I place my fermentation chamber in. I was alerted to the fact that measuring the swamp cooler water was a poor way to estimate the temperature of the actual fermenting beer. I have ordered a third DS18B20 and I want to measure the actual beer temperature. I want to see if …

Temperature Probe placement on brew kettle

I have the opportunity to get some hardware for my Keggle and I am looking at a weldless sight glass with a T shape that will allow me to screw on a thermo probe compression fitting. If I buy it I will be installing it at the same height as my welded fitting with the ball valve. My question is Where is the best place to install a thermometer on a brew kettle and would there be any issues with …

Temperature probe placement

I just built a fermentation chamber and bought a brew belt and a cheap thermostat on ebay to try to control the fermentation temperature. My main concern is, where do I place the probe in order to get a reliable measurement of the wort temperature? I don't trust placing the probe directly into the fermenter, so I thought taping it to one side. Is it fine or there are clever and more reliable solutions? Thank you for the help.

Networked/Connected Thermometer for Measuring Water in Swamp Cooler

I was hoping to put together an information system that could measure the temperature of the water in a bucket where I place my fermenting-bucket and notify my smart phone when I need to replace the frozen water bottles. I have an old Android phone. I know Java and can learn to program Android relatively easily. What I am missing is the networked thermometer that can measure liquids. The iGrill could potentially work; however, in the FAQ section it states …

Calibrating PID. Temperature probes PT100 not linear

I am working on my HERMS setup and have a few PIDS and temp sensors to work with. The problem is that the temp sensors show about 5 degrees celsius off when I first set it up. I Raised the water in my HLT to 70 deg celsius and measured with three different ordinary thermometers. Two digital and one glass. All three was quite near each other. At least enough for my needs. Within 0.5-1 degree celcius. I calibrated the …

Securing a threaded thermowell into a bucket lid

I perhaps may have made an oops and I bought this thermowell, thinking it would be easier to secure it to the lid than the regular straight walled one that everyone puts in a dual stopper. I thought to myself, "how does that thing stay in the hole, wouldn't the pressure work it outwards?" (a bit more of research here would have done me wonders..) Also I have one of the famed ds18b20 sensors, I got this one with a …

Temperature Control Issues

I'm testing out a brand new 200L system and found a couple of potentially disastrous but potentially easy-to-fix issues: 1) While mashing the temperature indicated on the thermometer which sits near the bottom of the tun was fluctuating wildly between 60 and 70 degrees. It might go from 62 degrees to 70 degrees in a matter of seconds, then a few minutes later fall back down, even without any additional heat from the stove or from hot water additions. Other …

Best position to install a bi-metal thermometer

Of course I'm asking about the height. How to calculate the best height to install a bi-metal thermometer like this: Dial Thermometer - MoreBeer ? Usually, we can see it installed in the middle of wort, approximately. But if we mash several volumes, should we calculate the middle of the smallest one ? This wouldn't harm the thermal reading of the largest wort volume ?

BrewJacket - How does this Work and How can I replicate it?

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/433436998/brewjacket-immersion-lager-beer-without-a-refriger I've spent the last year determining how I can combat the hot temperatures to brew beer. I resort to a swamp cooler and spend significant time adding frozen water bottles in order to bring the temperature down. This kickstarter claims that via its "patent pending solid state cooling system that pumps heat out of your fermenting beer using tiny heat exchange chips" it can reduce your fermentation temperature to LAGER TEMPS. Surely if this is possible it can be …

How to Use a Johnson Temperature Controller in Combination with a Ferawrap - Probe conflict with Raspberry PI

I received the Johnson A419 Digital Temperature Controller and will be getting a Fermwrap today in the mail (and I will be brewing tonight hopefully). I noticed that the Johnson model comes with a probe. Do I sanitize this probe and place it through the airlock into my wort? I currently use a Raspberry Pi with DS18B20 temperature probes to monitor the temperature of my wort, which I store in a database. I sanitize these probes and place it through …

2 Temperature Control Questions - difference in ambient temp; moisture control in chest freezer

I use a chest freezer with a Brewpad heating element stuck to the inside wall (for warmer fermentations/bottle conditioning), and a single-stage Johnson controller. Since getting this, I haven't used the freezer's compressor to cool the chamber, only the heating element, as ambient temps in my basement have been in the low 60's, and I haven't done any lagers or overly cold fermentations (yet). I have my temp controller probe taped to the outside of an Ale Pail/carboy, insulated by …

do I need a thermowell with stainless temperature sensor?

I'm planning a fermentation monitor based on an arduino board. The temperature sensors comprise a 1/4" OD stainless tube 8" long, which will be used with buckets and carboys. There are stainless thermowells for housing temperature sensors. These are 3/8" OD, 16" long. Do I need a thermowell in this case for measuring wort temperature, or can I put the temperature sensor directly into the wort without the thermowell? Here's why I'm unsure: the thermowell page talks about protecting the …
