Cuisinart Burr Grinder for small amounts of grain?

I only make beer using extract with grain, usually that amounts from 1/2 to 1 lb of grain in 5 gallon batches. Generally I have used the rolling pin method of smashing the grain in a plastic bag. Now, I have bought 10 lbs of grain to save a little money over the cost for 1 lb bags and am wondering if using a Cuisinart Coffee Burr Mill would work on the course setting? I use a strainer bag to …

How to crush unmalted wheat?

I made a witbier last weekend from a recipe which called for a pound of unmalted wheat in the grain bill (along with 8 oz pilsner malt, 8 oz flaked wheat, 4 oz flaked oats, and 6 lbs dry malt extract). The unmalted wheat was too hard for the mill at the local homebrew shop. I tried crushing it with a rolling pin with no success. So i wound up using it whole, which left me wondering if that was …

Monster Mill v.s. Kitchen Aid Mill attachment

We've been looking into getting a grain mill for some time now. I was pretty settled on getting a monster mill or some version of it until I saw the kitchen aid milling attachment. If this would work for milling brewing grains, it would be ideal as I could use the same mill to mill flour since it has variable settings on it. Has anyone ever used the kitchen aid milling attachment to mill grain for brewing?

Can I damage a grain mill by milling corn or sorghum?

I recently purchased a Crankandstein 2S grain mill. It is currently being "assembled" and I am considering making some silly beers with grains around the house; like corn and sorghum. Can corn damage a grain mill? The mill looks really strong, but I would rather make sure beforehand. How can I test if a grain might damage a mill?

Looking to get a new grain mill and want some advice

Long story long, I live next to a "brew on premise" and have always used their mill (barley crusher) to mill my grains. But now I am moving and time to grow up and get my own, does anyone have advice for which mill to buy? The "barley crusher" seems to be a good homebrew mill (the B.O.P. just purchased a second after 1,500 batches) but it really seems to be a piece of shit, The B.O.P. has been running …

How long can milled grain be stored?

At the rate that I'm going, I'm doing a homebrew roughly every second weekend. (Fun!) I will end up with a small stock of hops, and yeast I can keep around in the fridge for a while if I buy a few extra vials, but I'm wondering about milled grains? I don't have the space or inclination to mill myself. If I want to pick up 5-10 pounds of base grains and a small stock of specialty grains, and have …

How much torque is required to operate a barley crusher?

Question: How many in-lbs or ft-lbs of torque are required to crush barley using a mill such as the Barley Crusher? Motivation: I'm interested in motorizing my Barley Crusher. There are endless blogs entries and such on how to do this but the parts used often vary based on industrial salvage or the cheap motor of the week. Selecting equipment for this type of project requires a minimum torque specification I don't have, hence the question. No guessing please; I'm …

Stuck Mash -- New LHBS

I recently found that there was a home brew store much closer to my house than the one that I had been visiting. The new store has a larger selection of grains, yeast, and hops; but I've been having a lot of trouble with slow or stuck mashes since I started going to the new store. I don't have my own mill, so I rely on the LHBS to mill my grains. I thought that the mill at the new …

What difference does the crush make for steeped grains?

I'm wondering if I need to be mindful of how well my grains are crushed if I'm just using them for steeping. Do I need to get my LHBS to crush my grains or use the rolling pin / bag method? Or can I just whiz them in my coffee grinder? Does it matter how crushed they are? What harm could I cause if I end up with a fine powder? In this question, Denny mentioned a couple of things: …

Traditional Food Mills as a Grain Mill / Dough to Blow @ W-S

Anyone have any experience with trying to use a traditional food mill to crush grain? I'm afraid that I won't be able to get as fine of a crush as I need, plus it might be a pain in the neck to mill 10-15 lbs in such a small, non-motorized mill. Long and short, my wife and I have some $ to spend @ Williams-Sonoma, and was looking for good things to buy that can assist in the 'brewing' element …

For steepers, what's the easiest way to crush specialty grains?

For an all-grain or partial-mash brew, I'll go to the homebrew store and have them mill my grains for me. But extract w/grains brews are all about how short I can make them (because I'll do them on a weeknight with a friend). That means having my steeping grains on hand, rather than making a trip to the store. The standard way of crushing grains without a grain mill is the old rolling pin and Ziploc method. It's annoying and …

What gap should I set my mill's rollers to?

I just received a Barley Crusher mill - is the default roller setting sufficient for most grain types, or do I need to worry about adjusting it? Do you guys change roller spacing based on what grain you mill (i.e. barley vs wheat) or just keep it the same and crush away?

What are great grain mills that have variable coarseness such that it can be used for both brewing and making bread flour?

I'm searching for a grain mill with specific qualities. Ideally I'd like it to: mill grain for home brewing mill grain to the consistency of flour for making bread be able to be operated manually ( this item will double as disaster preparedness item for accounting purposes to the boss, my wife) optionally may have some sort of motor attached to it for quicker milling or have a removable handle such that I can jerry rig a motor to drive …

My beers are with a slight acid taste after the few first sips. What could be wrong?

So far I have brewed 5 times. First went perfect, though it was the first time I was using my kit and the grains were already ground. Second and third batches went wrong. My concern is with the last two batches. #4 is a pale ale, and I started opening the bottles after 7 days priming in the bottles. Fermentation went for ~7 days with fermentis US-05. For this btah I have bought a manual mill that crunches the grains …
