How to use sodium percarbonate

I have read that when mixed in water, sodium percarbonate gradually dissolves, leaving behind only water. However, I have recently come across this video which says that pre-used sodium percarbonate solution remains effective and can be used to clean/sanitise more equipment, as long as two days after initial use. Does sodium percarbonate really leave behind only water, or is there something else left in the water that means it can be re-used, as suggested in the linked video? When using …

Got major contamination in my brew

Something crazy happened. Out of my last 8 batches of mead and beer 6 came out infected. I am cleaning my equipment with PBW and sanitizing with Starsan. I make my batches in the kitchen (both beer and meads). Using clean tools, always keep at most 3-4 days old bucket with starsan solution, and yet, get every 3 out of 4 batches infected. Does it mean that I got some nasty air bacteria in the air that lands into a …

Is a teaspoon of no-rinse sanitizer (diluted) per pint toxic?

I did a brew last night and after pouring the wort into the fermenter i realised I'd forgotten to empty out the sanitizer i'd put in it. It was about 300 ml of Chemsan (described as "A blend of phosphoric acid, benzenesulfonic acid and isopropanol.") (that is, 300 ml of the diluted sanitizer, which, since it has a 2ml to 1 litre dilution ratio, about 0.6 ml of the undiluted sanitizer). So, this ended up mixed in with about 30 …

Accidentally used 100% unsanitized gear for brew - should I toss it?

tl;dr; I sanitized my mash pot, fermenter, and everything with water. Is it ruined? I'm two days into fermentation of a high gravity imperial stout, and the yeast is burping nicely. Due to a mix up between my wife and I, I just discovered that the star san spray bottle I used to sanitize everything was actually just water. Certainly this is not ideal, but is it dangerous? Should I let my brew ferment and see how it tastes, or …

Peroxyacetic Acid availability

tl;dr Do you know where to buy, food contact PAA in packaging ≤5kg and concentration ≤5% ? I was going to buy Peroxyacetic Acid that already have long history of use has been approved by EU, but it is next to unavailable in UK's professional online shops. Not many shop sells PAA that supposed to be used for food contact surfaces. But finding one smaller than 25kg is impossible! I would need only 500g or ml, considering the dilution., but …

Accidently added One Step sanitizer to my brew batch! Am I good or will I die?

I made a batch of ginger beer and brewing it hard at 5 and a half gallons. The fault came when I accidentally added a half-gallon of water with One Step in it to the batch before fermenting. It was originally a 1 gallon before I cleaned all my stuff, I totally forgot I had it in it. Should I be concerned? It doesn't seem to be stopping the fermentation and it is going very well. To add, before I …

Sanitizer sucked back into beer, dangerous?

So I just fermented a 80 Shilling and thought I would try cold crashing for the first time. I dropped it from mid 60's to 38 or so in a 24 hour period and it sucked about 4 cups of sanitizer up the blow off tube and into my 5 gallon batch. The sanitizer was the usual dilution to half ounce per 5 gallons. couple questions: Is the beer safe to drink? Can I re-pitch the yeast into another batch …

Milton / Baby bottle sanitiser?

Can anyone comment on the suitability of Baby Bottle sanitiser for cleaning brew kit? Milton is a popular brand name of such in the UK. I'd like to put a brew on this eve or tomorrow morning and have none of the usual 'Homebrew Sanitizer' left. Milton is however sold everywhere :)

Sodium Percarbonate safety

Suppose I did not adequately rinse the sodium percarbonate solution from my fermenter/bottles. Could this a) make somebody ill or b) affect the flavour of the beer? When I left sodium percarbonate solution in my demijohn to soak for 20 minutes, a residue was left at the bottom (sodium carbonate?) which did not rinse out with water. In the end I resorted to white vinegar to get rid of it. a) Does his sediment pose any threat to health/flavour and …

Star San ate my spoon - can it still be used?

In a nutshell: moved, Star San bottle broke, got on a bunch of supplies including my stainless steel spoon. Now the spoon is rough where the sanitizer spilled and slightly discolored. The spoon was a gift and has no manufacturer markings or the like, but it appears to be stainless steel. Is it toast, or is this just cosmetic?

does starsan kill yeast

Is Starsan effective against yeast? After resuming homebrewing again after a 2 year break, I started having pellicle appearing on my starters (after fermentation had completed), which has now spread to my plastic fermenting buckets so that the last 3 batches have been contaminated ("infected") - looking similar to this. The beer tastes fine, maybe slightly sour-sweaty. I plan to clean and sanitize all my equipment that's used post boil. I normally use Starsan to sanitize, but clearly the wild …

Chemipro Oxi Solution sucked in to beer during transfer

Will we have problems with this: About 2-3oz of Sanitizing solution got sucked in to the 5 gallons of beer during transfer to the bottling bucket. It was Chemipro Oxi and was diluted to 1 Tablespoon per gallon of water. It is a non-rinse sanitizer that is made from Sodium Percarbonate. Thanks

Effectiveness of Neale's Brewing Supplies no rinse sanitizer

What Ph level does Neale's Brewing Supplies sanitizer remain effective to? It has a similar ingredient list to starsan, which is listed to be effective so long as the pH of the solution is 3 or lower. I live in an area of hard water and want to check my sanitization is up to scratch... Also generally, how effective is this compared to StarSan? StarSan seems to be a lot more popular on the internet, but not sure if this …

Beer with Metabisulphite rinse

I made my first cider 3 weeks ago and the home brew shop gave me sodium metabisulfite as a sanitizer (1tbsp per liter) and anti-oxidant (1/8tsp per gallon). Last week, I did my first beer (5.3 quarts / 5 liters small batch all-grain). I also used metabisulfite as a sanitizer and it seems to have worked. My questions: 1) I have read that metabisulfite is not a strong enough sanitizer for beer, is it true? 2) When I let the …

I got some sanitiser in brew now I am not sure if its fermenting

I was cooling down my wort in the sink and couple of drops of sanitiser dripped from my hand into the cooling liquid. I was using VWP and the solution was as per the instructions 1 teaspoon per 4 litres. I would say less than 5ml got into 5 litres of brew. I pitched my yeast but feel like I am seeing very little action from the bucket. So my questions are Is it safe for consumption? Will that amount …

Peracetic acid as a sanitizer?

My friend got Paracetic Acid from his LHM store (they only had that and alcohol 70 there). Is it a non-rinse sanitizer? How good is it? Wikipedia says it corrodes metals, so no go for the crown caps? Does it have any other applications (thinking cleaner). Anything else he should know?

Sanitizing with bleach without rinsing

What concentration of bleach (or Sodium hypochlorite) diluted in water is necessary to sanitize bottles? How much time is necessary to keep the bottles immersed in the solution, or is sufficient to use a bottle washer that squirts the bleach inside of the bottles (commonly used with 'no-rinse' sanitizers like Star San, alcohol, etc)? How much time is necessary to wait until the bottles can be used (filled) when not rinsed?

Is submerging bottles in boiling water a good method of sanitization?

Is submerging bottles in boiling water (assuming they've been rinsed out) for a few minutes a good method of sterilization? I'm still planning on spraying some metabisulphite afterwards, and then some star-san just before bottling. I just want to know if I can substitute a bleach soak with boiling water water. This is because I find the bleach method takes forever, including having to remove the flip-top wiring from the bottle, and rinsing the bleach-solution residue from the bottle.
