What to do with blowout Krausen/wort

Surprised I couldn't find an answer to this so I'm posting the question. I brewed my first imperial stout. Fermentation was super happy, krausen went wild and my airlock blew out (from what I'm seeing online - surprise surprise). I installed a blowout tube and everything is going well - my question is what do I do with the extra wort/krausen that's building up in my blowout container? Do I just dump it down the drain or can I add …

Beer blew up into the airlock. What's next?

So it happened again. The beer blew out the airlock leaving a water and beer mix behind. The airlock still bubbles as per usual. Now I'm wondering what I should do next. Leave it as is Replace the airlock with another sanitized airlock and sterile water Just replace the water in the airlock Replace the airlock with a blow out tube Any of these the options make as much sense as the next one. I might have over-pitched with a …

Re-adding yeast after a blow off

I am a first time shiner. I had a blow-off this morning, I'm making shine. I use a plastic bucket with a screw-on air tight lid and an airlock. The pressure blew the screw-on lid off. After cleaning up and adding a blow-off hose, I noticed that the mash is no longer bubbling at all. And, that beautiful krausen I had is all but forgotten. Should I re-add yeast? I used 5 gallons water, 5 pounds of cornmeal and about …

How to clean krausen off of ceilings?

Woke up this morning to an unhappy surprise: Getting the ceiling clean has proven to be quite the challenge, since the krausen had dried off before I got to it. Can anyone share techniques that have worked for them in this situation? As it stands, I'm considering just burning down the house, collecting the insurance, and starting over.

Put the airlock really high could avoid blowing?

I was thinking about how to improve my fermentation procedure and reach a consistent yield of a full 5 gal of finished product after fermenting in 5 gal corny kegs. Searching on the net I've found this pic, and think: there is a heigth point to put the airlock that could entirely avoid blowing off? The plan was to fill the keg to the brim, link a long hose to an airlock and hang it high. After fermenting I could …

Mold growing on blow-off tube water -- batch ruined?

I'm brewing my first batch with a brooklyn brew show all-gain kit. I skipped the airlock and left the blow-off tube in place in a pot of bleachy water. It's been there for the past two weeks. Today, I go look at it to start bottling and I see mold growing on the water that the blow-off tube was plugged into! I guess the bleach evaporated.. Is the batch ruined? And to avoid this in the future, I suppose I …

missing blow off water

I fermented 12 gallons in a Sankey keg. Fermentation went fine as well as diacital rest for two days. After two days of cold crashing all of the sanitized solution that was in the blow off bucket is gone, the solution was a starsan mix. Is it salvageable?

Spunding CO2 from 3 keg fermentors

I'm starting to ferment in kegs, and want to naturally carbonate my beers by using a spunding valve. My batches yield 3 kegs, and I'm already using a 4º keg to aerate them after no chill and after the fermentation is done to transfer the beer to clean kegs. How to set the pressure on 3 kegs? First I was thinking in just make 3 complete spunding valves. But the parts here for me are a little expensive to do …

How to clean the inside of a refrigerator?

I bought a large chest freezer that I use to brew all my beer. It was always difficult for me to clean it because my brewing schedule did not allow for less than 3/4 of the freezer to be empty at any given time. I happened to fall behind schedule and now have a short window where the freezer is entirely empty. I sprayed the whole thing down with a lot of 409 and scrubbed, which gets most of it …

Krausen: Blow off tube or Larger Headspace?

Krausen: to blow-off or not to blow-off? With a large krausen (foamy head) in a fermentation vessel (FV), often the best remedy is to use a blow-off tube into a bottle of sanitizer. Question: Would it be better to have a sufficient amount of head-space, so that nothing is lost from the FV, allowing all the yeast, wort, flavour, and hops to remain inside the FV? Has anyone noticed any loss of flavour with excessive blow-off, such as the loss …

Foam Overflow - Residue on Carboy walls

I recently brewed up a Caribou Slobber from Northern Brewing. I had a foam over, I sanitized a new stopper, air lock and resealed the carboy. Now I have no bubbles in my airlock, and all of the sediment is on the walls of the carboy and not on top of the wort (so it is not touching the wort and therefore will not fall to the bottom). Is my brew okay? Its been over a week of this, should …

How to avoid blowoff on a 1 gallon jug?

I'm experimenting with 1 gallon batches, and every single time I had a blowoff. So for the batch I brewed today I just put a bucket of sanitized water and a blowoff tube to start with since I know that it'll blowoff while I'm at work otherwise. The recipe kit says to use half a pack of yeast, but even if I go below it I have Kräusen climbing out of the jug. Is there any harm in this and …

How long to keep in blowoff tube?

Today I learned what happens if there's too much yeast and a container too small (I have a 1 gallon batch). So according to instructions I sanitized a hose and connected the hole in the fermentor and put the other end in the sanitized water. Now, how long should I keep this setup? A couple of hours until there is no more bubbling? Just long enough to stop the heavy bubbling? Or all the way to the end of the …

Priming Sugar problem

I'm an extract brewing beginner. My first batch, an Irish Red, had decent head, decent retention, decent mouthfeel. I bottled after 2 weeks in fermentation, and bottle conditioned for the following 2 weeks. The beer was not bad. Problem batch: I picked up the stuff for a Manny's Pale Ale clone. Brewing process was good. I got a chance to use my brand new wort chiller (cleaned and sanitized properly before hand obviously) I kept it in the primary fermenter …

Airlock re-sanitization after minor blow-off

I had some minor blow-off enter (and exit) my airlock during the most active part of fermentation. The krausen has since gone down significantly, and there is no worry of the airlock getting clogged. The vodka, however, has turned a light brown due to the blow-off that entered the airlock. Should I be worried about this? Should I remove, resanitize, and refill the airlock? Or is the trade-off of introducing oxygen into the carboy while doing this a greater concern?

First Fermentation And Worried Something Is Wrong

I am doing my first fermentation using a Belgian Ale kit. I started this Monday evening and have it in a location that is running between 64 and 66*f consistent. On the first night, the cap of the airlock blew off and gunk came through the airlock onto the top of the fermenter. I cleaned that all up, sanitized the airlock again and replaced it. Tuesday night, bubbling in the airlock was still happening but not a lot. Today, there …

Should I worry about blow-off?

I brewed a batch of IPA yesterday and when I checked on it today it had started to blow-off. There is so much pressure in the primary that it has spilled up through the airlock and is constantly whistling. Should I be concerned about this? Is there anything I should do to correct it? The beer is a modified version of this recipe: http://hbd.org/discus/messages/15516/16500.html?1054613895 The modification was to use liquid malt extract instead (10 lbs) and substituted Wyeast 1056 (American …

Does a single FermCap addition control both boilovers and blowoffs?

I love FermCap for controlling boilovers. I add a few drops (less than recommended) as the wort comes up to boiling. It allows me to do other things during the boil to shorten my brew day. Here's what I'm wondering: The directions say to add a drop per gallon at the "start of fermentation". Does my boil addition count for that? Can I just add the recommended amount for my final volume to the boil and trust that all of …

Beer Lost Through Blow Off Tube

I set up my Blow tube as I have done other times before, (the same as pictured in this post What is a proper blow-off tube setup?) This time though when I checked it after after about 24 hours the yeast was going to town giving me a bubble about every second and it had siphoned about a gallon of my wort from the carboy into the bucket. Any idea as to what would cause this result?

What is a proper blow-off tube setup?

36 hours ago I brewed a BIG red ale and pitched some kick-ass WLP001. The picture on the left is what I had late last night (24 hr in). Made me a little nervous. And this morning the krausen had nearly reached the stopper. In the pre-work morning rush I rigged up this blow-off tube with a 1/4" tubing, the universal stopper, my 6 gal brew kettle (the most readily available container), a HUGE binder clip (for weight), 2 qt. …
