I have read that when mixed in water, sodium percarbonate gradually dissolves, leaving behind only water. However, I have recently come across this video which says that pre-used sodium percarbonate solution remains effective and can be used to clean/sanitise more equipment, as long as two days after initial use. Does sodium percarbonate really leave behind only water, or is there something else left in the water that means it can be re-used, as suggested in the linked video? When using …
I have this 15 Gallon stainless steel carboy, and cleaning it is always an adventure before I start my next fermentation. As luck would have it, removing the to rack means my carboy fits EXACTLY in my dishwasher. Can I just run the dishwasher with the heat sanitize cycle and some starsan pbw in the soap tray (To clean before sanitizing)? EDIT: After one of my responses (Be Careful with chlorine) I have a whole house filter, so I should …
What equipment is required to clean and fill a commercial keg (not one adapted for homebrewing), before paying for a full blown keg washer and filler? Is this even possible?
I'm considering getting one of those "Therminator" style wort chillers as an upgrade to the coil. I plan on gravity feeding the wort through and pumping back into the kettle until my wort is nice and lukewarm. The specs seem impressive, but it also looks like this thing would be hell to clean, and a bit annoying to sanitize, and I can't help but think bits and pieces of hops would easily clog this thing. Am I being paranoid?
I'm new to brewing beer and want to keep a close eye on SG, but I'm mindful of the potential cost when taking several hydrometer readings. Assuming all my equipment is sterilised, is it OK to return the sample back to the fermenter, or should I err on the side of caution and discard it each time? For sake of completeness: my sterilisation process consists of soaking the cleaned equipment (hydrometer, wine thief, sample tube, etc) in warm water with …
tl;dr Do you know where to buy, food contact PAA in packaging ≤5kg and concentration ≤5% ? I was going to buy Peroxyacetic Acid that already have long history of use has been approved by EU, but it is next to unavailable in UK's professional online shops. Not many shop sells PAA that supposed to be used for food contact surfaces. But finding one smaller than 25kg is impossible! I would need only 500g or ml, considering the dilution., but …
I let it soak in hot water solution overnight with LD Carlson Easy Rinse Cleaning Powder (I don't know what the actual ingredients are). I let it soak in StarSan solution overnight also. However, the plastic hose line is still spotty and cloudy. How can I clean the inside of the hose?
Brewed my first two batches this month and still trying to figure this process out. I'm using a couple (similar to this, but maybe not the same material) buckets (with spigots) for fermenting. They worked really well and sealed great but after cleaning them, they both still smell like beer. I used Oxiclean and hot water the first time and removed anything that was stuck on the sides with a soft sponge. Thought that would do it but a few …
I'm looking for a line cleaning socket for a Cornelius keg fitting. I've worked in the pub trade (UK) for more years than I care to remember so know how bars are set up and I am familiar with line cleaning etc. When I have performed line cleaning, there has always been a socket on the wall that I have connected the keg coupler too. does anyone know where I can find a wall socked for a Cornelius keg, ball …
Many batches ago I abandoned the sanitizing solutions sold (at ridiculous markups) from standard homebrew stores in favor of OxiClean Free. My logic at the time (being out of sanitizer, and at a grocery store) was that the active ingredient in OxiClean was sodium percarbonate, and the active ingredient in One Step was also sodium percarbonate. I haven't had a skunked batch yet, but inductive reasoning doesn't always lead you to the truth - so what is the general consensus …
I had a very nice sour beer that had lactobacillus in it and was wondering if I can clean and reuse the bottle? I have not made any sour beers yet but I've read you should keep separate brewing equipment when making them because even the most conscientious cleaner and sanitiser can't be confident of killing it all. Can I reuse the bottle for beer that doesn't contain lactobacillus? I have a dishwasher if that helps? Would the steam cycle …
Are Glass Beer Bottles safe to recycle/reuse? Since I can't know who drank out of it and what could be in it, I want to be sure that this is safe to do. What type of disinfection reagent would I use, and would I use warm or cold water? (I think warm water - unless it's boiling - actually helps some bacteria to thrive?)
I've been brewing for a couple years now, and lately my bottle collection has been more and more difficult to keep clean. I've always been thorough about rinsing the bottles with hot water immediately after pouring, and then turning them upside down to dry in my dish rack. Lately, 3/4 or more of my bottles have been left with a hazy residue in the bottom even after that rinse. Dirty: Clean: I've tried soaking them in OxyClean, StarSan, vinegar, and …
I've got a basic beer serving fridge out in the garage, just a few taps on the front and some bottles on the door. I'm developing a problem with what looks kinda like mold, I notice it mostly on the black rubberish top area but some on the stainless as well. It looks like it was peppered with a bunch of little tiny snowballs, white round and spread pretty evenly with some areas more concentrated then others. The mold substance …
I just got a brand new keg. The keg isn't just new to me but totally unused. Do I need to use TSP to clean it prior to my first use? I'm worried about industrial residues that might be left on the stainless steel.
I just started brewing my first batch (yay!) and want to set up for bottling while I wait. My question is simple: Can I start using Swing-Tops like Grolsch to bottle my beer? I've heard varying reports about skunking my beer with the green glass, or that the seal is imperfect. Do you think it would be any harder to clean the glass inside these reusable bottles? I would consider capping my own beer although I'd rather save the expense …
