Is the gravity reading from a Tilt Hydrometer adjusted for temperature?

The reason I ask is threefold. I watched my gravity readings go up from 1.039 to 1.043 as I cooled my wort before I pitched. I noticed in the System page of my TiltPI, it says SG 15C/59F (default) When I cold crash, the gravity readings go up. When I enter the temperature and gravity reading in a hydrometer temperature adjustment calculator, the gravity is the same as before the cold crash. It seems beyond reason that this device would …

High final Brix reading, 1.00 SG

I recently received a refractometer and tried it out on a batch of mead that has been in secondary for about 3 months. I took a reading of some distilled water, both read 1.00. I then dissolved 30g of sugar into 250ml of water and took a reading; both showed around 1.045. However, when I measure my mead, I get pretty much exactly 1.00 on the hydrometer but 10 brix (1.040 sg) on the refractometer. Interestingly, the mead tastes quite …

Alternatives to a hydrometer?

I can't seem to keep a hydrometer for more than a few brewing sessions. They either break from dropping them, going from hot to cold, or I've had the wax holding all of the lead pellets to the bottom melt and shift the paper. Are there any other ways to measure gravity or alcohol other than using a super delicate hydrometer?

Hydrometer reading - should I discard or reintroduce the sample?

I'm new to brewing beer and want to keep a close eye on SG, but I'm mindful of the potential cost when taking several hydrometer readings. Assuming all my equipment is sterilised, is it OK to return the sample back to the fermenter, or should I err on the side of caution and discard it each time? For sake of completeness: my sterilisation process consists of soaking the cleaned equipment (hydrometer, wine thief, sample tube, etc) in warm water with …

What is the name for this gigantic dropper or pipe that a person use to suck liquid out of a container?

I saw it in a video about hydrometer, and I can't find anywhere where to buy this gigantic dropper. what are its name and size? It seems about 250ml which is what I need. Thanks! The tube in the center, ignore the tube on two sides that dropper in his hand! its not a dropper I just dont know its name at all!!

Still struggling to read my Hydrometer

I’m struggling (again) to make sense of my Hydrometer. I am brewing an American IPA from a kit. I started on Sunday and before pitching the yeast I took a reading (photo 1), I had 24 hours crazy fermentation, then nothing. Barely a bubble. Today (Thursday - Day 4) I took anther reading (photo 2). Something has definitely happened and it floats a lot lower! I am meant to be adding hops on day 7 and tasting it on day …

Refractometer vs. Hydrometer

For years, I've always taken my gravity readings with the hydrometer that came with my original homebrew kit. There's nothing wrong with it, but I've been thinking lately about switching over to a refractometer. While I enjoy tasting the progress of the beer at various stages, I'd like to limit the amount of beer I pull out of my batch to take gravity readings (an pbvious benefit of the refractometer). Which of these two tools is more accurate/precise in taking …

How Does a Hydrometer Work?

I know how to use my hydrometer, and I know what numbers to look at and write down on my brewing sheets, but I'm not sure what those numbers actually represent, or even what units I should use to label those readings. What's the science behind the hydrometer? How are they calibrated? What else should I know about the theory of using one to make better beer?

Urgent help for a new beginner

I'm about to brew a 5lb batch, I don't really know exactly the step when should we add corn sugar though. Also, I'm wondering that once I'm done boiling and adding DME, yeast, hop, etc.. then shall I cover my bottle with the lid and an airlock as well as taking a sample to pour into the test-jar? I don't think the beer in bottle and jar have the same condition to be the same. That's all I need to …

Fruit making hydrometer readings unreliable

I brew hedgerow wines, but am unable to get reliable measurements from a hydrometer. Given that measuring ABV requires me to take one of the hydrometer measurements right at the point of pitching the yeast, there is often a lot of fruit/berry debris floating in the mixture at this time. The density of all this tends to 'push' the hydrometer up or down in the glass; hence my readings aren't particularly reliable. In fact, I can often manually push the …

How to predict ABV in cider?

I am new to cider brewing (my first batch has just started fermenting). As I'm new and just want to trial the process before getting into something more involved, I used store bought juice (no additives etc). I got myself a hydrometer, and have measured the OG (1.049) and understand that I will need to measure the FG to calculate the final ABV. My question is this: if I need the FG to calculate the ABV, how does one predict …

Correct temperature effect on Specific gravity

Is there an equation that corrects specific gravity while considering temperature effect in Celsius, which does not presupposes a set hydrometer calibration temperature? A direct relation, not tables or something static. And if there is one, where would you find it? A similar question was asked Here, but the answers are all in Fahrenheit or assume a 15 C (59 f) calibration temperature.

Hydrometer Temperature Limit

I am about to do my first all-grain batch. After (batch) sparging is it safe to drop the hydrometer right in or do I need to let the wort cool to a specific temperature first? I realize I will have to do a temperature correction to get the proper pre-boil reading, I am just wondering how hot is to hot for a hydrometer to withstand.

My first homebrew has a very low alcohol content

I just finished my first homebrew (yay!), but my hydrometer is reading a very low alcohol content. I brewed an Edme bitter (pre-made wort and I bought the malt extract) and it tastes great, but it's only reading about 1% alcohol content. I have a floating-style hydrometer that came with my brewing kit. I basically had it in the primary for about 5 days, then in the carboy for another 11-12 days. Then I added my corn dextrose (I believe …

What unit does my hydrometer show?

My hydrometer shows units I can't conciliate with whatever I read on the internet. It shows from top to down: 00 10 20 30 40 50 On Internet however, the gravity should be measured in floats of the 1.xxx type. How should I read this hydrometer?

What does a gravity reading really mean?

The simple/short version of the question: What does a hydrometer gravity reading of 1.036 really mean? Does it mean the density of the liquid is 3.6% greater than that of distilled water (ignoring inaccuracies and errors in measurement)? The context/long version of the question: When creating a yeast starter, it is commonly advised to create a light wort in the range of 1.030 to 1.040 gravity by using 100g of dry malt extract (DME) per liter of water in the …

I didn't know I had to take a reading before fermentation. I crushed my own fruit so no kit to use for calculation

This is my first time brewing and I didn't know that I had to take an initial reading prior to fermentation. I used my own apples to make cider. Can I still get an estimate on alcohol content? I think it's about done fermenting as it's been in the bucket for a little over a week. I took a reading and have 1.35 specific gravity, 4% potential alcohol, 8% sugar (Balling) on my hydrometer. Bucket reads 68%. The brew smells …

Can the final gravity be multiplied by the ratio of beer to water?

If one ends-up with, say, half as much beer as needed to float the hydrometer, is dilution a viable way to get a measurement? For instance, if one carefully measured the volume of available beer for the sample, mixed that beer with the same volume of water, then floated the hydrometer and took a reading, could that result be multiplied by 2 to get a valid gravity of the undiluted beer?
